The AVETT BROTHERS: LIVE IN CONCERT
I’ve been drawing and printing posters for the Avett Brothers since 2016. They commission a poster for every show they play, and fans both at the show and across the continent collect them religiously. So the pressure is always on to put out exciting and eye pleasing work that connects with people who are passionate about the music.
One of my favourite drawings I’ve ever done for an Avett Brothers poster is this image of a couple relaxing on a blanket listening to music and drinking beers in the grass. It was an experiment in a new looser drawing style that really changed the way I think about drawing and layering colour. But more so, I’m just happy with the design. It evokes this kind of open-to-interpretation romance that I strive for, it feels appropriate for that specific show which took place in a grassy outdoor amphitheatre, and it ties into the local culture via the quilt. Each state has an official quilt square design, just like how they have official animals, plants, and coats of arms. The design sewn into this quilt is of course the state square of Minnesota. These are the kinds of subtle easter eggs I love working into illustrations.
On occasion I’ll reference imagery that fits with the Avett Brothers Americana/folk/bluegrass sound. Like these two poster below. The left one is drawn in a style paying homage to the folk artist, Jane Wooster Scott, a style synonymous with early New England art. And the right is meant to feel like the vintage souvenir tea towels that could be found at gift shops across America, and now are a staple of antique shops.
