ALEX MACASKILL
Midnight Oil is the studio alias of Alex MacAskill, an illustrator, graphic designer, and printer living in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Alex graduated from NSCAD University with an Interdisciplinary Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Upon graduating, he moved to Nashville, Tennessee to work at Hatch Show Print. Hatch is letterpress print shop that’s been operating for over 140 years. They’re famous for their posters for country musics greatest stars, and helped to shape the graphic identity of classic country music as we know it today. After honing his design and print skills here for a few years, Alex moved back to Nova Scotia to be with his fiancée and set up his own shop: Midnight Oil, which was founded in May of 2017.
Through the Midnight Oil brand, Alex is able to work on a broad scope of projects. From editorial illustration, to developing brand identities, to revisiting where his design career started by creating gig posters for bands and musicians across North America. His work is inspired by process, textures, the history of illustration and print, and all things organic, which is often why his work is screenprinted or letterpress printed by hand. Alex has always had a strong love for animals and the environment, and you often can find him with a pair of binoculars, birdwatching with his now wife, Stephanie, and two cats.

The focus of the in-house printing services are to further the design and illustration services. Because of this, I no longer print client-provided artwork.
Currently I am only accepting professional projects and do not take on any personal work.
I apologize for any convenience this may cause and will happily recommend printers, artists, designers, and illustrators who can take on projects that I cannot.
