ALEX MACASKILL
Midnight Oil is the studio alias of me, Alex MacAskill. I’m an award-winning illustrator, graphic designer, and printer living in Halifax, Nova Scotia. I like to use illustration to explore the world, teach and learn, and connect people to their environment, community, and cultures in ways that other mediums can’t. My favourite projects are ones that allow me to fuse my passion of art together with my passions for music and nature.
I graduated from NSCAD University with an Interdisciplinary Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 2015. I then moved to Nashville, Tennessee to work at Hatch Show Print. Hatch is letterpress print shop that’s been operating for over 140 years. They’re famous for their posters for country musics greatest stars, and helped to shape the graphic identity of classic country music as we know it today. After honing my skills there for a few years, I moved back to Canada to be with my fiancée and set up my own shop - Midnight Oil - which was founded in May of 2017.
I’be been busy drawing, designing, and printing ever since.

The focus of in-house printing services are to further the design and illustration services. Because of this, I no longer print client-provided artwork.
Currently I do not take on any personal projects.
I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and I will happily recommend printers, artists, designers, and illustrators who can take on projects that I cannot.
