Jason Isbell: Live in London, ENGland
This poster marks my first time working with Jason Isbell, my first poster for a show outside of North America, and my first time stepping foot in the UK! I actually got to go deliver the posters in person, see the show, and tour around London for a few days. Because it was a special event, I really wanted it to be a special poster and I took extra care with the design.
The overall design is based on this old Yorkshire Tea tin. A little bit of a cliché, I know… but it really is a gorgeous design. And some internet research told me that Yorkshire is the preferred brand among the English.
I needed to replace the vignettes in the design with something more relevant though. I chose to draw instead a reference to John Constable’s The Hay Wain, a beautiful and historically significant painting by an artist that helped shaped the English identity. A mockingbird, the official state bird of Tennessee, where Isbell now resides. And Isbell’s signature Telecaster guitar, representing the music that brought him from one place to the other.
And of course to replace the tea leaves, I went with roses and oak leaves, both symbols of England.
Lucky me, I even got to visit the National Gallery and see The Hay Wain in person.
